A Democratic Reunion
(Cross-Posted to DemNotes at www.DemNotes.com)
OK, I know its already Thursday, and I’ve been remiss in posting to DemNotes lately. I hope to get over that soon — next week, I’m leaving for the Northeast to attend the DNC and ASDC Executive Committee meetings in Burlington, Vermont, and I’ll be reporting from there more regularly (I hope).
I did go to Drinking Liberally here in Canon City last night, but I’m not going to write about that. And I did get to attend my very first concert at Red Rocks on Monday night, and was amazed by the venue, and could not help but think how we need to use it during the Convention a year from now — but I’m not going to write about that, either.
Instead, I want to write about my Saturday afternoon here in Canon City. The Fremont County Democrats held a great event to try to draw people and volunteers back into the Democratic Party. The “Democratic Reunion” was in conjunction with the DNC’s “Democratic Reunion” weekend, and it was really a lot of fun. Both Rep. Buffie McFadyen and I spoke, but the event was not really about speechifying — it was about getting together with like-minded souls and talking about issues important to Fremont Democrats. And about having fun.
There were volunteer boards set up for each of the six “areas” of the county, so people could write down issues important to them and volunteer to assist with organizing their precincts. There was a great silent auction for the Party’s scholarship fund, and there was a huge potluck spread of such a variety that pretty much any taste would be satisfied.
After all of that, there were games. Now, I must admit that I was a little skeptical of the games at first — my first reaction was to dismiss them as a bit corny. But I was wrong — the games were a great way to top off the day and build comaradarie among the local Dems. We had a three-legged race, a shoe race, an egg toss (I just barely missed getting egg all over myself), and a water balloon toss. County Party treasurer Brandy Johnson and her dad were clearly the athletic ones, as they dominated in both the egg toss and the water balloon toss.
The weather participated, and everybody I saw left with a great big smile on their face as storm clouds just started to roll in. It really was a great day to be a Democrat in Fremont County, and I’d encourage other counties to consider including a wide variety of activities at their picnics and potlucks coming up here in August.

Thanks to Fremont County for inviting Saguache County. Some of our folks attended and they enjoyed the picnic in Canon City. It is nice to attend regional activities to get to know each other.
